Choosing Wisely
Any licensed dentist can legally call themselves a cosmetic dentist — no separate credential required. That makes your selection process the real quality control. Here is the checklist we would give our own family.
Judge a cosmetic dentist on five things: real before-and-after photos of their own patients (cases like yours, up close), a preview-first process where you see and approve the design before anything permanent, named laboratory partnerships, itemized written pricing, and a willingness to recommend less treatment. Credentials and reviews matter — but those five behaviors are where excellent and average actually separate.
The American Dental Association recognizes specialties like orthodontics and periodontics — but not cosmetic dentistry. Any general dentist, from a master ceramist-collaborating artist to someone who took a weekend veneer course, can market identically. The title tells you nothing; the work tells you everything.
That is not a reason for cynicism — Houston has genuinely excellent cosmetic dentists. It simply means the burden of verification sits with you, and the verification is very doable: cosmetic dentistry conveniently produces photographic evidence of every case.
Meaningful signals worth knowing: postgraduate cosmetic training programs (Kois, Spear, Dawson, AACD accreditation) indicate serious continuing education; years of documented cases indicate experience; and hygienists, physicians, and other dentists choosing an office for their own families is the quiet endorsement money cannot buy. Our own cosmetic dentistry page lays out how we approach cases — hold it against everything this article recommends.
Every office shows photos; few patients know what to look for. Five checks turn a portfolio from marketing into evidence:
Beyond the portfolio, how an office works forecasts how your case ends:
Some warning signs justify politely ending a consultation:
None of these alone proves bad dentistry — but two or three together reliably predict the experience ahead. Trust the pattern.
Three Houston quotes for “the same” veneer case can span thousands of dollars — and they are usually not the same case at all. Differences hide in:
Compare complete plans, not headline numbers — and let monthly financing math make the comparison concrete. The cheapest quote that skips design, laboratory quality, and bite protection is the most expensive smile you can buy; you simply pay the difference later, with interest, in redone work.
Turn all of this into a week of calm homework:
Evidence, not adjectives: a deep portfolio of their own healed cases, a preview-first design process, named laboratory partnerships, honest itemized pricing, and a documented habit of recommending conservative options. Titles and ads are marketing; those five behaviors are quality.
Legally, no — cosmetic dentistry is not an ADA-recognized specialty, so any general dentist may use the title. Practically, yes: focused postgraduate training, case volume, and ceramist relationships separate offices dramatically. Verification is the patient’s job, and portfolios make it possible.
Seven earn the most signal: Can I see your own cases like mine? Will I preview my result first? Who makes your ceramics? What is the most conservative path? How will this look in ten years? What if I dislike the result? Is the written estimate complete?
For any plan involving multiple veneers, implants, or five figures — yes. Reputable offices welcome comparison because thorough plans survive it. Bring your written estimate; how an office discusses a competitor’s plan tells you plenty about both.
Usually not. Discount pricing typically means milled single-shade ceramic, no design preview, and no bite planning — the exact ingredients of the flat “chiclet” look and early failures. Financing a quality case beats re-buying a cheap one.
Yes, read for the right things: reviews describing process — previews shown, options explained, pricing honored, follow-up handled — predict your experience. Star averages and “so friendly!” volume predict very little about ceramic quality.
The estimate is itemized, in writing, before treatment — teeth listed, laboratory included, follow-ups and nightguard addressed — and the office presents a cheaper path alongside the full one. Verbal ranges that harden after you commit are the classic warning.
Pressure — expiring discounts, same-day commitment pushes, or a veneer quote produced before your gums and bite were examined. Irreversible dentistry deserves reflection time; any office engineering urgency around it has told you its priorities.
Enormously — the ceramist executes the artistry your dentist designs, and hand-layered work by a named laboratory is often the single biggest quality difference between quotes. A dentist proud of the partnership will name it instantly; treat evasion as data.
